What does Heathrow City mean for self-builders?
In a major shake-up of UK transport infrastructure, Heathrow, which handled over 48 million passengers in the first 8 months of 2013, would be replaced by the Thames Estuary Airport if plans for the new airport are accepted. The closure of Heathrow would lead to a regeneration of the West London site, with a proposed 190,000-home city, named Heathrow City, complete with technology campus and shopping and entertainment facilities to take the place of terminals 1 to 5.
One of the main questions on the lips of many has been what would this mean for Britain and its economy? The government is estimating that Heathrow City would create 90,000 jobs and pump £7.5 billion into the UK economy, which many would agree would be a welcome boost.
It is in the second set of plans created by firm Hawkins\Brown that much interest from the home building community lays. Outlined in their vision for Heathrow City is a 'self-build' factory-for-homes, which would help the Grand Designs devotees create their dream homes for less. It would mean would-be Kevin Mcloud’s up and down the country could go online and order their house to their specification, something which is commonplace in Europe but less so here in Britain.
Government statistics suggest that the UK self-build market makes up about 7% of new builds while in Hungary that figure is closer 50% and in France it is around 38%; however, 58% of Brits questioned in a 2011 survey by the Building Societies Association would consider building their own home if given the opportunity.
