Getting the blend between traditional and modern design can produce stunning results when done well. We spoke to John Davidson about how Silvelox helped him to get the balance between classic and contemporary just right.
Tell us a bit about the project
I had always wanted to build my own modern take on a classical home, using modern materials and techniques but with a style grounded in tradition. I love the way the traditional brickwork and stone columns sit with the ultra modern aluminum windows. Although they contrast with each other they don’t look out of place on the same property – that was a key design feature.
Why did you choose Silvelox?
Silvelox garage doors capture the essence of the house. Traditional hand crafted design and finish, along with modern engineering techniques made Silvelox a perfect fit – and both the garage and front doors make up a large part of the front elevation of the house - so they were key to the overall finish.
There were 3 main features that I had in mind when I chose the front and garage doors we design, security and insulation. I had looked at other door manufacturers but they didn't stack up when I compared them to Silvelox. They either had good design but fell down on the security and insulation or had great security and insualtion but were ugly and not well designed. Silvelox were the only manufacturers that gave me the best of both worlds.
How did the project go?
It went really well, even when we had a late change of plan. Originally I had planned to have one double garage, separated by a stone column and walkway, but had a change of heart. We changed the design to have one integral garage, but that left me with the problem of the column and walkway. The Silvelox team solved this by using modern wooden cladding, to wrap the column, along with matching double and single garage doors. They also suggested a natural timber and stain, which would work best with the modern design and blend in well with the other materials. I was really pleased with how they creatively solved the problem and I think that the doors and timber enhance the overall look of the property.
How did you find Silvelox?
I first met Silvelox at The Grand Designs exhibition and was instantly impressed with their products. I had never seen the pedestrian door before and the way I could match my garage door to my front door were the things that initially grabbed my attention, but now that the doors have been fitted I just love the hand crafted finish. In my opinion there’s something immensely satisfying about a naturally beautiful piece of hand finished solid wood.
